Welcome to One Book One Community
Unifying a community, like reading a good book, requires an understanding of the entire cast of characters, patience, and a willingness to listen to the experiences of others.
The Allegheny County Library Association is pleased to announce our 2010 One Book One Community program. The goal of One Book is to establish common ground across our community by bringing individuals together for stimulating discussion and provoking new thinking. With Pittsburgh’s selection as host city of World Environment Day 2010 what better opportunity could there be to encourage all of our community members to be good stewards of our region!
Our eighth One Book selection is:
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
This book chronicles one man’s journey along the Appalachian Trail and is filled with humor, adventure, mishaps and most importantly an appreciation of the natural beauty of the environment along the trail. What begins as an adventure becomes a learning experience about the history of the trail and the environmental dangers that both man and nature pose. As Allegheny County is establishing itself as a nationally recognized green community, Bill Bryson’s lessons learned along the Appalachian Trail underscore the importance of preserving our natural environment.
Through our One Book programs and discussions, we hope to broaden perspectives, share thoughts, and learn from the wealth of knowledge and experience that many in our community have to share. Programs and events to support One Book will be announced throughout 2010. Join us in discovering how you, too, can make an impact in the “greening” of Allegheny County.
